Nigeria Supports UN Resolution Against Russia

Nigeria on thursday gave her support to the UN General Assembly Resolution that declared Russian annexation of Crimea as illegal, affirming Ukraine's territorial integrity. The resolution was supported by 100 countries, with 11 countries voting against it while 58 were absent in the 193 member UN General Assembly.

This was contained in a statement issued by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Joy Ogwu, which said “Nigeria voted in favour of the resolution solely on the basis of principle’’.
“We want it to be clearly understood that by voting for these resolutions, Nigeria neither supports nor opposes any particular country or group of countries.
“Rather, Nigeria firmly upholds the sanctity of the UN Charter and the principles of international law in accordance with the Declaration on Rights and Duties of States of 1949.
“We weighed the evidence of the case on the scale of justice and the reality of the situation in our own part of the world.
“We also considered the universality of the application of the principles that we pledged to uphold in our interaction with the rest of the world,’’ she said.

She also urged member nations to respect the Rule of Law at the international level.
